Eighteen

As Liam backed out of the way, he spotted Henry and Harmony walking in. Family trumped friend, so Liam backed away and gave them room. He took the time to text Chief Osborne. He didn’t know if Matt saved his number, so he introduced himself.

This is Liam Morrison. There’s been an accident.

That wasn’t right, so he deleted the second sentence.

A beam was cut at the Beachfront. The entire patio roof collapsed on Willow. It appears as if it was meant for her. She’s headed to the ER now. Please come investigate.

Harmony kept her distance as the paramedics transferred Willow to a spinal board. She covered her mouth with one hand and reached to Willow with the other. “My little girl,” she cried, then turned to Liam. “Is she going to be okay?”

Forcing a smile was one of the hardest things he’d ever done. He pressed send and shoved his phone in his pocket. “Of course,” he said, then repeated the reason for the spinal board. Next, might be the hardest thing he’d ever said. “You’ll be in the ambulance with her. I’ll bring your car and meet you there.”

Without taking her eyes from Willow, Harmony shook her head. “No. She needs you.”

“Give me your keys, son,” Henry added.

Liam looked from Harmony to Henry but neither paid any more attention to him. He was speechless, which was a good thing since the relief that flooded his body wouldn’t allow him to say anything otherwise.

Willow gave a thumbs-up as they loaded her. He assumed it was to reassure her parents, but it made the entire crowd cheer. There was no cheer anywhere in his being.

The outer edge of the patio roof crushed the wooden floorboards. He found the beam she spoke of, both pieces. Someone did this to his Willow. Premeditated and purposely. That someone was going to pay. For now, his focus needed to be on her. His Willow? She wasn’t. Had he really declared her as his life?

He dug in his pocket and took out his keys. Tossing them to Henry, he followed the gurney and jumped into the back of the ambulance.

As the sirens blared, the male paramedic pointed at a spot for Liam to sit next to Willow. He lowered to the seat next to her as the female inserted an IV into Willow’s good hand.

“Uh,” Liam stammered. “I’m Liam.”

The guy nodded. “I got that.” He pulled a latex glove from his right hand. “I’m Paul. This is Carol.”

Carol wasn’t willing to sacrifice the glove and extended a crooked arm. They elbow bumped before she continued with the IV.

“Liam,” Willow croaked.

“I’m here.”

“You stayed.” She grinned a toothless smile and made everything better.

Her blinks became longer. Remembering Carol’s reaction to the unconscious Willow earlier, he looked in her direction and lifted a single brow.

“It’s okay. I gave her something for the pain.”

Relaxing in his seat, Liam gently rubbed the hand of her potentially broken arm and watched the paramedics work. The IV bag swayed as the van drove around evacuation traffic on the wrong side of the road.
